smith, tyrone woods and glen doherty, all killed tuesday at the american consulate in benghazi. the secretary of state began by offering these words of tribute. >> so we will wipe away our tears, stiffen our spines, and phase the future undaunted. and we will do it together, protecting and helping one another, just like sean, tyrone, glen, and chris always did. >> in addition to the presence of their families and the most senior members of government, this was also an opportunity for friends and colleagues to pay their respects. dozens of of state department workers boarded buses in washington to attend the ceremony. the president said those that gave their lives represented the very best of american leadership. >> the united states of america will never retreat from the world. we will never stop working for the dignity and freedom that every person deserves, whatever their creed. whatever their faith. that's the essence of american leadership. that's the spirit that sets us apart from other nations. this was their work in benghazi and this is the work we will carry out. >> but whil

. embassy. that's what happened in egypt. what happened in benghazi was totally different. there were -- it was allegedly inspired by the same thing, the same video, but in that city, militants attacked the u.s. consulate. it appeared coordinated. they appeared to be using military tactics. they were armed with heavy weapons. that's not the thing an impassioned crowd just does. an impassioned crowd doesn't just have rpgs on hand, move in and have an attack that takes place in at least two waves. that's the kind that al qaeda or an al qaeda-like organization, and there are many of them in libya, could carry out against the u.s. consulate. what's unclear is did they know that the u.s. ambassador was there at the time, or was that just a coincidence? these are all open questions. another open question, so where does this go from here? and there are supposed to be demonstrations on friday. the egyptian government, the new islamist -- or islamic-leaning government of president morsi is encouraging these demonstrations on friday, a completely different tactic from the former regime of presi

the president presiding over that solemn ceremony, repatriation of those heroes who died in benghazi. then you look at what mitt romney has done, peggy noonan and other conservative commentators are calling small and tinny, the tone he's taken over the last few days. you see the president doesn't really have to go after mitt romney, although certainly he has gotten in his jibes, most recently on david letterman last night, but lets everybody else savage his opponent in the days leading up to the debate. >> mike viqueira, thanks. we'll be right back.
